As a service based online business owner, you should be really thinking about building your credibility so people can regard you as an expert in your chosen field. One of the best ways to achieve this is by creating and running your own blog / website with lots of useful articles and content so people are hungry to read more and learn. You will be able to establish yourself as a social influencer and can earn money via social advertising through your blogs and social networking profiles. You may have considered doing this for quite a while, but due to family and social constraints etc, you may have delayed starting this venture.

Recently however, I came across a fantastic article entitled ‘The 8 habits of highly effective bloggers’ which touches on some very important points which many bloggers are unaware of or simply do not practice. The author, Annabel Candy came up with these habits after spending considerable time researching some of the top bloggers, such as Brian Clark, Darren Rowse and Leo Babaita – and pinpointing the habits and behaviours that these and other successful bloggers had adopted.

I will highlight four of the habits which really stood out for me by making important points on how you should approach your blog.

- Be Prolific

The writing of regular articles to build brand awareness and traffic to your site is critical. This is the fuel which drives interest to your blog. At the absolute minimum, you should be writing at least one informative blog post every week, although 2-3 posts per week would be better if you can find the time to do this. You can even post video or audio files to your blog if the writing side of things does not appeal greatly to you.

- Be Organised

You must learn to become organised and make the time for your blog. Good time management is essential here and you must stick to a schedule to get things done with your blog. This means quality time and not simply looking at your Facebook account and checking emails. Research is also key in all of this and you can gain further ideas and insights by looking at sites written by the top bloggers for example.

A very useful plugin you may want to try is the WordPress Editorial Calendar. This plugin enables me to compile information, articles of interest and other notes as I am doing my research, so that everything I need to create my post is in one place.

- Be Analytical

Being creative and coming up with new, interesting and informative ideas on which to write about can be challenging even for the most experienced blogger. You need to be on the lookout for what your ideal client is talking about and making sure that these are the topics which you cover and write about in your articles / blog posts. If you can provide good useful content and information in which your reader can learn something or overcome a problem, then you are definitely on the right path to ensuring that your blog is a success.

- Be Focused

If someone were to visit your blog, they would need to understand exactly what you could for them within a few seconds otherwise you could lose them from your site very quickly. Your messages must be consistent and uniform with the content on your blog. Your website header, your tag line/slogan, the categories and keywords you blog about and your blog posts should all speak a consistent message that showcases the fact that you are an authority in your field.

It is important to remember that your blog/website is the first impression that people will have of you and your products and services. It is almost like your shop front. If you consistently follow the above 8 habits, you will stand a far greater chance of succeeding with your blog and also build up your credibility and trust at the same time with your readers. If this is the case, then they will be more ready to take some sort of action which you might recommend and spend some money.
